Abstract

1418767 Plate heat exchangers GARRETT CORP 29 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4425/73 Heading F4S Inlet and outlet ducts 50 and 56 for a highpressure fluid, e.g. hot compressed air, are sealingly connected to the opposite end faces of a heat exchanger unit 10 by way of resilient elastomer gaskets 16 held in a compressed state by means of tie-rods 62 extending between the ducts 50, 66. Each gasket 16 is bonded to one of the end faces of the heat exchanger unit and includes a side extension or wrap-around portion 18 and an outwardly extending projection 34. The gasket, when compressed, is held between suitably contoured flange portions 40, 42 of the duct. The heat exchanger 10 is used for cooling hot compressed air from an engine turbo charger compressor 52 prior to its entry into an engine inlet manifold 54; a turbine driven fan 64 passes cooling air in cross flow through the exchanger 10. As shown the unit 10 comprises a plurality of parallel plates spaced apart by bars to define alternate passages for the flow of cooling air and hot compressed air respectively; the passages include corrugated fins. The heat exchanger unit 10 may, however, be of tubular construction (not shown).
