In an arrangement for protecting induceddraught fans for locomotives from near by solid particles, one or more baffles or deflector plates are provided in the smoke-box of the locomotive upstream of the fan so as to separate a substantial proportion of the solid particles entrained in the flue gases before said gases reach the fan. The separated solid particles may be re-introduced to the flue-gas stream downstream of the fan or they may be returned to the firebox.
