In compressing gases &c. by driving them through a venturi tube by means of combustion gases obtained from a combustion chamber at the inlet to the venturi, both the fuel and the air &c. to burn it are preheated and precompressed so that the combustion takes place at as high a temperature as possible before the gases are led from the combustion chamber 2 through a nozzle 3 into the gases &c. to be .compressed in the venturi tube 5, 6. The fuel may be a gas or powdered coal and the combustion chamber have heat insulating walls.
