Class 8(1) The degree of scavenging in a high pressure scavenge stage is controlled by means of a movable vane 34 which controls the point of admission of the scavenge gas from duct S2D and the amount of gas supplied to the rotor from a duct S2C which is supplied with gas from the outer annular chamber of a combustion chamber fed with gas by the duct S2B, the combustion products being returned to the duct S2D. The vane is cooled by allowing a small part of the gas from duct S2C to flow over that side of the vane in the duct S2D.
