[Class 51 (i)] In furnaces provided with travelling or reciprocating grates admission of air between the sides of the grate and the cumbustion chamber wall is prevented by admitting into the usual air passages 7 at the side of the grate 1 an inert gas such as combustion products or nitrogen. The gas is supplied under pressure into a conduit 3 from which it issues through apertures 10 into a chamber 9 having walls 11, 12 terminating adjacent to a flange 6 on the side of the grate. The gas is delivered above and below this flange and prevents the inlet of air to the grate. Gas passing to the chamber 13 above the flange expands and enters the combustion chamber through passages 15, 16, 17 where it suppresses combustion of the fuel against the wall 14
