Abstract
723,694. Suitcases &c. KENNEDY, J. F. July 16, 1953 [July 19, 1952], No. 18295/52. Class 18. A box or suitcase having a, deep hinged lid (of box form), the walls of which are at some level a snug fit with the walls of the body, has space between at least the corners of the lower edge of the rear wall of the lid and the body, permitting the lid to be brought forward to clear the front edge of the body as the container is opened. In one embodiment, hinges 2 of an expanding suitcase are spaced from the rear wall 9 and from the adjacent vertical corners, and a strip 10 contacts the lid to provide the fit. In other forms the body rear wall projects rearwardly at its upper edge. The radius of the rear body corners may be greater than that of the lower adjacent corners of the lid to provide part of the required space. Flexing of the rear wall of the body and/or lid may assist in facilitating opening.
