721,119. Cables. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Aug. 5, 1953 [Aug. 8, 1952], No. 21618/53. Class 36. A star quad telephone cable is made by placing insulating spacers 1, 1<SP>1</SP> on each pair of conductors 2, 3 and 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, at regular intervals, the spacers being arranged to lie against an insulating core 5, the surface of which is provided with helicoidal projections or ridges on which the spacers are wedged. The core is preferably of square cross-section, and the spacers, which may be moulded on the conductor pairs, may be semi-circular, the flat side of each being formed with a recess to fit on the core 5. The core may initially be of circular cross-section and is passed through rollers 6, 7 to form it to the desired shape. The core passes through the centre of a rotating disc 11 on which the rollers are mounted, so that the shaping of the core is helical. Spools 12, 13, carrying the conductor pairs with the insulating spacers thereon are also mounted on disc 11 so that the conductor pairs are laid on the shaped core with the appropriate twist. A guide or die may be placed at 16 to ensure that the pairs of spacers, which may be formed with complementary meeting surfaces, come together correctly. An external sheath completes the cable.
