Abstract

717,859. Valves. CORAM, W. G. May 13, 1953 [Feb. 19, 1952], No. 4387/52. Class 135 A valve closure member comprises a thimble 11 of elastic material which can be stretched by a plunger 22 so as to seat on and close off an inlet port 20 of which the axis is in alignment with the direction of movement of the thimble, and when the plunger is moved in the opposite direction, the material of the thimble relaxes and withdraws the closure member from its seat. The upper end of the thimble is clamped between a shoulder on the valve casing and a plug 17 screwed into the casing. The construction shown is a water tap with the outlet 21 held by a setscrew to a ferrule 36 screwed into the valve casing. The thimble is covered by a metal cap 35 and the sides may be prevented from collapsing by a metal cylinder housed in the thimble. A jumper 32 is interposed between the lower end of plunger 22 and the inside of the thimble. The plunger is connected to an actuating cover 25 by means of a cotter pin 31 which engages in slots in the upper end of the plunger and in the top surface of the cover, and the ends of the pin also take into slots in a cap 33 screwed on to the cover. The latter is screwed up and down over the valve casing to open and close the valve.
