Abstract
713,579. Valve gear. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 18, 1952 [April 18, 1951], No. 9865/52. Class 7(6) A valve rocker 5, with a wedge-shaped end formed by surfaces 9, 10 contacting respectively a cam 4 and the valve stem 11, is moved transversely of the axis of the valve 2 in order to compensate for clearance variations due to temperature changes. The rocker 5 is pivoted at 6 in a pillar 8, preferably of a light metal or alloy possessing a high expansion coefficicient, bolted to the cylinder head by a tension bolt 7 of a material such as steel having a lower expansion coefficient. The pillar 8 also has a greater mass on the side of the vertical centre line adjacent the valve than on the opposite side, which latter side may be provided with a steel strip 14 anchored at both ends in the pillar 8. Due to the asymmetrical formation of the pillar 8 and the tension of the bolt 7 and strip 4, the pillar 8 bends slightly when it becomes heated, causing the rocker 5 to move slightly to the right which, by withdrawing the wedge-shaped part 9, 10, compensates for the reduced clearance between the cam 4 and valve stem 11 due to expansion of the valve stem.
