Abstract

711,655. Blasting explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 30, 1953 [April 21, 1952], No. 9934/52. Class 9(2) Semi-gelatine and powder blasting explosives contain at least one water-soluble inorganic oxygen supplying salt and a xylogalactan, which absorbs water and forms a protective gel to inhibit leaching of the salt. Suitable xylogalactan is obtained by drying the mucilage of commercial psyllium seed, which includes seed of Plantago arenaria, P. lanceolata, P. ovata Forskall, P. Leoflingii, and P. psyllium, preferably obtained by cold water extraction. 0.1 to 5 per cent of the xylogalactan may be used which is finely ground to pass 60 B.S.S. preferably 120 B.S.S.. All solid ingredients of the explosive, including the xylogalactan, should be thoroughly mixed before any liquid components are added. Examples include as ingredients nitrated mixture 4/1 glycerol/ethylene glycol, sodium and ammonium nitrates, sodium and ammonium chloride, mono- and tri-nitrotoluene, nitrocellulose, aluminium, calcium stearate, china clay, woodflour, starch, woodmeal and waxed woodmeal. Comparative examples are given including sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, guar, locust bean, British, Indian, Ghatti, and cherry gums, dextrin or sodium alginate in place of the dried psyllium seed mucilage.
