Abstract

483,492. Explosives. TENNANT, W. J. (Safetee Torpedo Corporation) Oct. 20. 1936, No. 28545. [Class 9 (ii)] A detonating explosive for railway signals comprises chlorate of potash, fibrous carbonaceous material, such as wood-flour or sawdust, granular abrasive material, such as sand, and a nitrocellulosic resinous binder, in the proportions 8:1:8:2. The potash and carbonaceous material are screened, moistened with water, allowed to stand for one hour and then mixed thoroughly, after which the abrasive, also moistened with water, is added. The binder comprises a mixture of solutions of nitrocellulose in butyl and ethyl acetate and resin in ethyl alcohol. The nitrocellulose is reduced in the proportion of one part of nitrocellulose to three parts of each of the acetates, and the resin in the proportion of one part of resin to two of alcohol. The solutions are mixed in equal proportions and added to the mixture of potash, carbonaceous material and abrasive, which is divided into cakes which are dried at a temperature preferably not exceeding 150‹ F.
