Abstract

1,147,307. Explosive compositions. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP. 25 July, 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 34141/67. Heading C1D. [Also in Division F3] An explosive composition comprises nitromethane and from 0À1 to 20% by weight of a water-insoluble and nitromethane-insoluble polymerized thermosetting resin in the form of thin-walled hollow spherical balloons. The resin may be a phenol-formaldehyde or a ureaformaldehyde resin. A gelling agent, e.g. nitrocellulose, may also be present. Carbon black, graphite, ethylene or propylene polymers, and specified aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and alkyl ethers of saturated glycols may be added as fuels, and ammonium, sodium, or lithium nitrate as an oxidizer. Other optional additives are guanidine nitrate, PETN, and RDX. The composition is suitable for use as the core of a detonating cord or in oil wells to fracture oil bearing formations. The Specification also claims detonator cords in which the core composition comprises nitromethane, a gelling agent, and 0À1-20% by weight of a finely divided, air entrapping material, e.g. the resin balloons or bagasse, ground balsa, or wood flour.
