Abstract
535,971. Explosives. LORENZINI, E. Oct. 18. 1939, No. 28145. [Class 9 (ii)] Blasting, sporting gun, and rifle powders of the chlorate and perchlorate types are made by dissolving organic or inorganic chlorates or perchlorates or both, in water or other solvent, with or without a solution assisting addition, admixing " gluing " substances such as starch, dextrine and gum arabic, and " improving " substances (i.e. pyrosaline, cellulose, coal dust, bast fibre shive dust, saw-dust, sulphur, or dyestuff), concentrating to a pasty consistency, admixing the paste with oily stabilizing substances (e.g. petroleum jelly paraffin, castor, linseed, or turpentine oil, resin, tar and tallow), slowly cooling the paste, and then either preparing blasting cartridges therewith, or sieving and granulating it to obtain gun and rifle powders, which are finally dried under moderate heat. Potassium chloride may be added to adjust the detonating power of the explosive, and nitrates (e.g. potassium nitrate) may also be mixed with the chlorate or perchlorate salts.
