[Also in Group XXI] To cast a lining in situ in a tunnel or bore by a tunnelling shield a that is advanced by jacks b, there is located behind said shield and progressively advanced therewith a shuttering unit 1 spaced from the bore excavated by the shield and the shuttered space to the rear of the feet of the jacks when retracted is filled with aggregate which forms an abutment for the jacks on further advancement of the shield during which stage the grout is fed into the compressed aggregate. The cycle is repeated. Each charge of aggregate may be fed with grout on each advance of the shield, or a series of charges may be fed with grout simultaneously. The grout is fed through the walls of the shuttering unit through means separate from that by which the aggregate is placed behind said shuttering.
