Abstract
578,091. Tunnelling. MANGNALL, A. R. May 20, 1943, No. 8052. [Classes 68 (i) and 85] In tunnelling, particularly for military mining operations, the spoil removed is passed into voids in the surrounding earth which are accessible through openings in the tubbing and are created as the boring proceeds. The tunnel is formed by a shield comprising a thin cylinder 4 provided with a thick inner ring 4a rotatable therein to enable hydraulic cylinders 5 and rams 5a to be positioned in line with ribs 3b constituted by inturned flanges of tubbing segments 3 lining the tunnel; the hydraulic rams are actuated by a motor and pump unit 6. One or more normally closed holes 2 are formed in some or all of the tubbing segments, or between adjacent segments. A carriage 14, running on rails 15 fixed between tubbing segments, pivotally carries semi-cylindrical guides 11 for an outer cylinder 16 extending rearwardly from a ram operated by an inner cylinder ; a cylinder 9 is first projected through one of the openings 2 into the ground, and the soil within the cylinder 9 is then compressed to form a void into which spoil from the tunnel face is inserted and compressed. A trailing hydraulic power unit 19 operates the ram, thrusts from which are taken up by jacking screws 12 and a backing plate 13. The cylinder 9 may afterwards be withdrawn.
