Abstract

942,640. Boring earth &c. CALWELD Inc. April 25, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 15754/62. Heading E1F. Earth boring apparatus comprises a support 32, ram means 46 extendable from the support, a pusher 44 fixed to the ram means, a kelly 42 rotatably and slidably mounted on the support and extending through the pusher, and means 190 to lock the kelly to the pusher for simultaneous sliding movement of the pusher and kelly. The apparatus shown has the kelly connected to an auger 60, and the pusher provided with adjustable structures 204 engageable with and permitting insertion of casing 64 into the hole as it is bored. The kelly is adjustably locked to the pusher by the means 190 which engages a thrust bashing 168 rotatable in the pusher and one of a series of pairs of notches 194 in the kelly. The apparatus complete with auger and a casing section is wedged in a pit 48 by jacks 54 and a motor 36 is started. A kelly drive tube 92 in which the kelly is slidably mounted is rotated by the motor through a gearbox 40, clutch 66, and reduction gearing 67. The hole is bored by extending the hydraulic rams 46, other piston rods 132 of which slidably contain rods 148 which permit a double extension of the rams. When the maximum extension of the rams is reached the rods are retracted, a length of auger is coupled between the auger in the hole and the kelly, and a section of casing is welded to the casing in the hole and engaged with the structures 204 so that boring and casing laying may proceed. When sufficient casing is laid the auger is retracted and removed a section at the time.
