Abstract

987,180. Boring earth &c. KOEHRING CO. Dec. 10, 1962 [July 20, 1962], No. 46457/62. Heading E1F. Earth boring apparatus comprises a kelly a rotary sleeve, and tapered rollers carried by the sleeve to engage and rotate the kelly. The kelly 23 carries an auger 70, or rotary or percussive drills. The sleeve 51 carrying the rollers 59 is driven by an I.C. engine 32 and a transmission including a torque converter 34, a gearbox 36, a brake 37. During boring and withdrawal, the surfaces 100, 102 respectively of the rollers engage the kelly. The sleeve housing 49 is fixed to the engine frame 31 which is connected by a pivoted frame 27 to a vehicle. The attitude of the boom 14 is controlled by a cable 16 and that of the kelly and auger is controlled by rams 73, 83, the ram 83 being connected to the engine frame 31 and a cable 124 also attached to the frame 31. The top of the kelly may have a yoke carrying rollers engaging fixed rails, the yoke being pivoted to the kelly to permit rotation of the kelly.
