Abstract

1284149 Boring earth INSTITUT FRANCATS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 22 April 1970 [30 April 1969] 19307/70 Heading E1F An earth drill has automatic control of the weight applied to the drill bit to maintain the weight for maximum drilling speed. The drill may be driven by a down-the-hole motor 6 e.g. a hydraulic turbine on a flexible drill string, as shown, or by a rotary pipe string (Fig. 2A not shown). In the former case the weight is controlled by an endless track clamping arrangement 9 driven by a motor 10, and in the latter case, the pipe string is suspended in a derrick on a cable connected to a winch similarly driven by a motor. Followers 16, 20 monitor respectively the length of the drill string (L) and the speed of advance (Vd) at the surface, and a transducer 15 produces a signal indicating the tensile stress (T) in the drill bit. The speed of advance (Va) at the drill bit is calculated by a computer 13 from the equation: where α is a measure of the elasticity of the drill string, and #T is the increase in load during the time interval #t between successive computer operations. The computer also derives the quotient #Va/#T where #Va is the increase in Va during the interval #t, and generates a signal on line 12 to engage or disengage the clutch 11 to maintain the ratio #Va/#T within limits near the maximum value of Va. The computer may also generate a limit speed when the motor speed or drill load reaches a predetermined safety limit, and may read out the value of the penetration speed Va at 27.
