Abstract

1,180,910. Rotary-tunnel digging apparatus. MAVOR & COULSON Ltd. 27 Nov., 1967 [24 Dec., 1966], No. 57858/66. Heading B1F. Apparatus for forming a tunnel comprises a tubular shield 1 movable along the tunnel, and a tunnel cutting machine 2 fixed in the shield and having a boom 4 with a rotary cutting head 5, the boom being mounted so as to be universally-pivotable and its movement being automatically controlled so that a cam follower on the boom is continually urged into engagement with a cam on the shield having a profile corresponding to that to be cut. The boom 4 is mounted on brackets 6 and is pivoted about a horizontal axis 7 by rams 8, the brackets 6 being carried on a turntable 10 rotated by rams 11 for pivoting the boom laterally. The boom 4 and the drive shaft for the head 5 are telescopic, their movement being effected by a ram or rams. A scraper conveyor 14 carries material from the front of the machine, the material being swept up a ramp 20 to the conveyor by an auger 21 rotating with the head 5. The shield carries a part-circular guideway 22 supporting a winch 23 for hoisting concrete wall sections 24 up the guideway, and it carries rams 25 for pressing against the end face of the wall to advance the shield. The rams 8, 11 may be controlled manually and the rams 25 may be used to steer the shield. Instead of the boom being telescopic the turntable may be displaceable fore and aft.
