Abstract

719,799. Tunnelling. BRIDGE, E. K. Jan. 28, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 2252/52. Class 85 A method of tunnelling through earth comprises rotating a shield carrying fixed cutter blades by means of a tangentially disposed jack which bears on the end block of spirally positioned lining blocks, the shield being forced forward by thrust rollers thereon engaging with the forward facing surface of the last laid row of blocks. The shield consists of a cylindrical steel shell 1 having a forward cutting edge 3 and a rearward edge 4 formed as a two-start spiral, a hydraulic jack 5 being mounted tangentially on the shield adjacent each start. Cutter blades 6 are mounted on a frame 7 welded to the leading edge of the shield, the clay, &c., from the blades falling into compartments 8 and thence into hopper 11 which feeds it on to a conveyer belt 13. Mounted in the centre frame 7 is a steel tube 10 in which is housed a shaft carrying a fluted point 15, the shaft being angularly adjustable with respect to the tube axis so that its point serves as a steering means for the shield when the tunnel is to follow a curved course. In operation, jacks 5 which bear on the last-laid, precast concrete blocks 31 of the tunnel lining are actuated by hydraulic pressure causing the shield to rotate. At the same time thrust rollers 28 mounted on the shield and which bear on the forward facing surface of the last-laid row of blocks cause the shield to move forward. When the main jacks 5 are fully extended, auxiliary jacks are operated to hold the last block in position and the main jacks retracted. The next block is then placed in position by a hydraulically actuated arm 38 and the operation repeated. Specification 564,643 is referred to.
