Abstract

1319871 Tunnelling machine ATLAS COPCO AB 19 April 1971 [19 March 19701 23925/ 71 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine has shoes which may be moved into engagement with a tunnel wall by one or more power jacks acting on a respective first axis transverse to the machine, and a cutter head pivotable about a second axis transverse to the machine and spaced from the or each first axis. As shown, Fig. 1, the machine has a frame 1 having shoes 16, 17, 30, 32, and has a frame 2 having shoes 46, 48, 53, 54, all of the shoes being movable into engagement with the tunnel wall by respective hydraulic jacks. Cutter heads such as 21, each comprising a motor and rotary cutter, are mounted on frame 1 for pivoting about a vertical axes. In use, the shoes of frame 2 are extended to grip the tunnel wall, and frame 1 is slid forwards by hydraulic jacks 3, 4, 5, 6 to cut the walls to a depth 65, Fig. 3. The cutter heads are then pivoted across the machine part to cut material. When jacks 3, 4, 5, 6 are fully extended the shoes of frame 1 are extended to grip the tunnel wall and frame 2, with its shoes retracted, is pulled forwards. The machine may be steered in any direction by the selective extension of the shoes and jacks. The number and arrangement of the cutter heads and shoes may be varied, e.g. frame 1 may be equipped with one, two or three pairs of cutter heads, each pair being pivotable about a separate vertical axis. The cutter heads sweep debris into the tunnel centre where it is collected by conveyor 60.
