Abstract

1,019,886. Tunnel-boring machines. JAMES S. ROBBINS and ASSOCIATES Inc. Jan. 29, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 3754/64. Heading E1F. A tunnel-boring machine (Fig. 1, not shown) having a rotary cutting head (11) is steered during cutting by means of rearwardly extending trunks 36A, 36B which are slidably received in a steering box or carriage 34 which is adjustable transversely of the tunnel relative to tunnel gripping anchor means 27. In use, shoes 27, pivotal about axes 46, 52 in cross-heads 30 are moved by four jacks 32, each engaging both cross-heads, to engage the tunnel wall. The machine frame with power driven cutting head (11) is then advanced by four jacks (37) (Fig. 1) which are universally pivoted to shoes 27 (Figs. 2, 9, not shown). Steering jacks 33 act between one cross-head 30 and lugs 72 of a muff 31, and serve to slide muff 31 horizontally. Muff 31 carries a centrally pivoted axial beam 77 (Fig. 6, not shown) whose ends verticallyslidably engage side walls 80, 81 of carriage or steering box 34. Four jacks 38 move carriage 34 vertically relative to muff 31 and thereby also pivot it about the tunnel axis and about the horizontal axis perpendicular thereto, and carriage 34 receives trunk bars 36A, 36B of the machine frame. Independent and/or collective actuation of hydraulic jacks 33, 37, 38 enables the machine to be steered by re-alignment of its frame with respect to the tunnel axis. As shown, shoes 27 are acted on by springs 56 to urge cross-heads 30 into the normal relative orientation and springs (91) (Fig. 6, not shown) tend to do the same between muff 31 and carriage 34. Fig. I further illustrates buckets (13), flexible dust shield (12), disc cutters (18) conveyer (17), crane (24), hydraulically operated shoes (20), (21) which slide along the tunnel wall, and support (26) which is extended to support the machine while shoes 27 are being shifted along the tunnel in preparation for a further forward step.
