443,158. Tunnelling &c. McALPINE, SIR M., 50, Pall Mall, London. Aug. 22, 1934, Nos. 24223/34, 10407 /35, and 18617/35. [Class 85] In means for forming tunnels or the like comprising a shield advanced in steps by an annular series of hydraulic jacks and followed by a shuttering around which the lining is formed, the shuttering is attached to the shield and adapted to be drawn bodily forward, and the jacks bear against a pressure - ring between the shuttering and the wall of the excavation. In Fig. 1, a shield a is advanced by hydraulic &c. jacks c which bear through a ring f against concrete between the tail of the shield and a tubular shuttering e which is advanced in turn by rams &c. j connecting it to the shield ; the concrete is forced through pipes i and forms the tunnel lining. In another form, the shuttering is tapered to facilitate its advance and is rigidly fixed to the tail of the shield. The rear lower part of the tail of the shield may be shortened so that the concrete is laid directly against the bottom of the excavation. In Fig. 4, the ring f is fixed to the jack rams by screws h and a plate k holds flexible rings g against the ring f; springs m act through segmental rings l on the flexible rings g.
