Abstract
501,223. Culverts and like structures. MAUNSELL, G. A. Jan. 12, 1938, No. 962. [Class 33] [Also in Group XXI] A culvert or like structure is formed of precast reinforced concrete rings A, twc complete metal rings B extending from the face of one ring and being adapted to enter two recesses C in the opposing ring substantially filled with plastic asphalt or the like. In another form, one or both rings B enter asphalt-filled recesses in both opposing rings A. An annular recess E is cast in the face of one or both rings A between the rings B, into which grout may be forced through an embedded tube G. The rings are forced together by the jacks of a tunnelling shield or by bolts passing through holes opening into the recess E. The rings may be circular, oblong, elliptical, hexagonal or other shape, and the recesses C are wider than the rings B so that adjustments in the alignment of the tunnel &c. may be effected; further, one or both recesses C may be extended to connect with a water tight sheath of asphalt, metal, felt, &c. inside or outside the ring.
