Abstract
954,595. Tunnels; tunnel lining slabs. KINNEAR MOODIE & CO. Ltd. Jan. 2, 1963 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 1342/62. Headings E1B and E1F. A tunnel lining comprises annular sections 3 each formed by concrete segments 4, 5 having edges 6, 7 shaped to permit limited hingeing movements between adjoining segments. The substantially equal segments 4 and the smaller key segment 5 are arranged so that joints between segments occur in a horizontal diametrical plane and at the lowermost point of the section. The segments are precast with concave and convex edges 6, 7 chamfered at 17, stepped ends 8, 9, and holes 12, 19. In modified segments the ends are concave and convex, or plane. In erecting a section the two lowermost segments are first laid, and remaining segments are built up progressively, adjacent segments being temporarily joined by members 15 which also serve to pull sections together. The void outside the lining is filled with grout through the holes 19, and the joints between segments packed or pointed. In the erection of linings having sections with plane ends, the members also span the joints between adjacent sections and are also bolted to the adjacent sections.
