Abstract

797,413. Towers. ZINN, W. V. May 23, 1955 [Aug..13, 1954], .No. 23645/54. Class 20(1) [Also in Group XIII] A reinforced concrete cooling tower or like structure has a conical, hyperbolical, or other curved shell made of separately pre-cast elements 1 of concrete or other material. The elements are so formed that when assembled they determine the shape of the shell. The elements are assembled so as to break the horizontal joint between them, and are held together by reinforcing tensioning means. They may be blocks which are tapered throughout their lengths, and if necessary curved to produce the required shape of tower. Alternatively, as shown, rectangular blocks are separated by tapering blocks 1x. At the vertical joints the blocks are channelled, tongued and grooved, or halved, and the spaces may contain reinforcing material and be filled with cement. Steel reinforcing or tensioning rings 11, Fig. 8, may be located in channels 10 on, or in recesses in, the blocks. The rings are received by the channels or recesses themselves, or bv hooked lugs 12 or 14 on the surface of the blocks or on flat plates 13 in the channels or recesses, or by recesses in such plates. The rings are covered by cement. The blocks are held in position during assembly by channel-shaped rings encircling the tower. The rings are attached to the blocks during building, by locking nuts and bolts engaging in nuts embedded in the blocks. Scaffolding is connected to these rings.
