1286957 Wells &c MOTT HAY & ANDERSON 28 Jan 1970 [1 Feb 1969] 5569/69 Heading E1F In a tunnel lining comprising rings formed of segments, the ends of segments 14 (Fig. 3) in a ring have undercut co-operating formations 16, 17 or have undercut formations engaged by a member 21 (Fig. 5). The adjacent ends of rings 11, 12 (Fig. 6) have co-operating laterally locating formations or have laterally locating formations engaging an intermediate member 26 (Fig. 8). The members 21 may be tapered to expand the ring against the tunnel wall. The segments are of steel or ductile iron, and the joints between segments are sealed by strips 40, 41 bonded to the segments and each other by an epoxy resin or bituminous composition. During driving the tunnel a "shove ring" 30 (Fig. 12) is engaged in a laterally locating formation of the last erected ring 11 and is engaged by jacks 15 driving a tunnelling shield 10 which is generally circular but has projections to conform with enlargements of the tunnel such as shown in Fig. 3. The lining may be used in a dig-and-fill tunnel.
