Abstract

999,822. Driving pipe lengths underground. E. H. BERGSTOM. July 19, 1963 [April 24, 1962], No. 15502/62. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] A pipe is driven through the earth by driving a series of pipe lengths 14 by means of an hydraulic jack or jacks (not shown) located in a thrust pit 10, fitting on the last pipe of the series a sleeve 15 carrying a series of retracted jacks 18, driving a further series of pipe lengths 19 with the leading end of the series engaging the sleeve to drive the first series, and actuating the jacks 18 to drive the first series. A further series, or several more series, of pipe lengths may be added to the first and second series. The sleeve 15 has a fixed flange 16, and a ring 17 movable within the sleeve. Each joint between series includes resilient rings 20 and grout 21 (Fig. 8). The core of earth which forms within the lengths is removed at intervals.
