1,238,576. Tunnels &c. WILLIAM F. REES Ltd., D. F. REES and J. B. GARNETT. 6 May, 1970 [13 May, 1969], No. 24383/69. Heading E1F. The lining of a tunnel of oval section is extended by excavating a length of tunnel ahead of the lining, feeding a tunnel lining unit 10 through the lining with the major axis of a cross section of the unit extending lengthwise of the tunnel and with the minor axis of the cross section parallel to the major axis of the tunnel section, and rotating and positioning the unit to form the lining extension. Units are connected by ties 12 until external grouting has set. The lining may be surrounded by foamed cement packing pieces 14 having grouting holes 15. The joints between units have rubber seals 13. The tunnel is driven by a shield 17, having a sliding hood 21, jacks 18 and a packing ring 27.
