Abstract

1362251 Wells etc; shields for miners GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA 31 Aug 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 40566/71 Heading E1F A method of driving and lining a tunnel or the like elongated earth excavation comprises the steps of advancing strips 2 to cut a length of tunnel or like, excavating the earth enclosed by the strips, laying lining sections 15 to line the excavation as it advances, bring up a mold 17 to cooperate with the rear sections, inserting cement into the mould to form a section of permanent lining, and allowing the cement to dry before advancing the mold, the steps being repeated until the tunnel is complete. The strips are supported by a frame 4 and are attached singly on in groups to a drive frame 8 for advancement by jacks 9. A trench may be formed by the method. In a modification additional strips extend across a horizontal diameter. Tunnel side walls formed separately may be combined with an arcuate roof formed by the method of the invention.
