Abstract

1303419 Tunnels; tunnel shuttering J KRISMER JNR 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 22396/ 71 Headings E1F and E1S A tunnelling shield has an enlarged leading end carrying a blade 4 and forming a step 5 having cavities 8 housing bags 9 which are inflatable to engage previously cast and set tunnel lining to propel the shield forwardly. The shield body 2 is slightly tapered and circular in section, but the section may be oval or elliptical. The shield tows a thinner cylinder and a protective apron is suspended adjacent the joint between the shield and cylinder. After the shield has been advanced, the void between the set lining and the step is filled with concrete supplied through pipes 6, which may be heated, air or water also being supplied by pipes 20 to clean the outlets of pipes 6. Probes for consolidation of the concrete may be introduced through holes having axes 27, and reinforcing may be passed into the lining through holes 26. Dry concrete mix may be supplied through the tubes 6 and water may be supplied through further heated pipes opening into the void adjacent the holes 26. The front of the body may be plugged with cement when the shield penetrates water-bearing ground, the plug moving rearwardly relative to the body as the shield is advanced. The blade is formed in segments and its cutting edge may be serrated. The body is formed in segments to permit dismantling in blind tunnels. Sections of concrete lining may be separated by packing supplied through holes 25.
