Abstract
1336578 Underground workings COYNE ET BELLIER and W TER-MINASSIAN 23 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 61016/70 Heading E1F An underground working is driven by a shield having a cavity 7 housing a plurality of flexible tubular annuli 8 joined together at their edges to form a tube, the annuli being sequentially discharged rearwardly as the shield advances, and filled with a hardenable liquid (e.g. a grout of cement) to form a lining. The shield is moved forward by jacks (not shown). Casings 14 support the annuli while the liquid hardens and are dismantled, moved forward and re-assembled one by one as the shield advances. Alternatively, the casings are slidable as a unit (Fig. 2) inside the shield and are moved forward as the shield advances. Hardenable liquid is supplied to a tubular annulus such as 11 5 through openings 22 in the casings by a pipe 27. The forward edge of the tubular annulus may be supported during filling with hardenable liquid by a reinforced flexible annular tube (not shown) mounted on the rear edge 6a of an inner wall 6 of the shield and inflatable with compressed air. Alternatively, the support may be provided by water supplied under pressure by a pipe 24 to the front part of the cavity 7 (Fig. 2). The pressure of the water assists the progression of the shield. A differential manometer limits the pressure in the cavity during filling of the flexible tubular annuli. An annular section 28 of the wall 6 may be removed to replenish the supply of annuli in collapsed form. The annuli are made of plastics material reinforced with fabric or fibres (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) and have resilient tubular mouthpieces or screwthreaded connectors (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) for the injection of hardenable liquid.
