Abstract
1,100,029. Tunnelling shields; tunnels. NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATEL' SKY INSTITUTE OSNOVANY. I PODZEMNIKH SO-ORUZHENY. 20, Nov, 1964 [30, Dec, 1963], No. 51215/63. Heading E1F. In a tunnelling shield for use in loose earth and having transverse cutting blades 2, conveyors 3 are provided adjacent the blades for removing spoil from the leading end of the shield. The conveyors have endless belts which are driven by gearboxes 21 and racks 5 when the rams 6 of the shield are retracted to advance the part 19 of the shield. Spoil discharged from the conveyors is lifted over an edge 24<SP>1</SP> of a partition 24 by a bucket 13 mounted on a swinging arm 12 to fall on vibratory plates 15, and spoil from the plates is removed by a conveyor 14 leading to further conveyors (not shown). As the part 19 is advanced concrete is injected by a pipe 17 into the space behind the part to form the lining 16. The shield may be steered by adjusting the relative speeds of the conveyors.
