Abstract
1,154,707. Tunnels &c. A. HEERINGA. 1 July, 1966 [1 July, 1965], No. 29750/66. Heading E1F. In the construction of a channel or tunnel, a section or sections of lining is or are advanced over, or through, a solid material such as earth, by forming a layer of parallel strips extending in the direction of advance between the section or sections and the material, by advancing each strip or a group of strips until the whole layer is advanced, and by advancing the section or sections relative to the advanced layer. A culvert is constructed through a dyke by forming a layer 3 of strips 3a about a section 1, driving one or more of the strips in turn through the ground to advance the layer bodily, and advancing the section relative to the layer. Soil is removed prior to the advance of the section. The strips which may comprise sheet piling or wood may be advanced by a horizontally acting pile driver, or by a tackle connecting the interior of the section, or a group of driven strips, to the strip to be advanced. The section is advanced by jacks reacting on blocks fixed to the layer. After the section is positioned the strips are withdrawn separately. Rollers or lubricant may be interposed between the layer and the section. The layer of ground above the culvert may be held in place by partitions transverse to the direction of advance. In a modification a shield reacting on the strips leads the strips. A tunnel section without floor lining and supported by piles may be advanced by strips extending along the top, or the top and sides, of the section.
