Abstract

1335676 Tunnels &c CEMENTATION CO Ltd 31 Jan 1972 [9 Dec 1970] 58538/70 Heading E1F A tunnel formed by sections 6 is constructed by placing a shield 1 in a jacking station 3, advancing the shield, aligning behind the shield a section or sections, advancing the section or forward section by hydraulic rams 8 reacting on the shield. After the shield has been advanced by hydraulic rams 4 on the shield, reaction block 2 and packing pieces 5 the sections are aligned behind the shield and connected by ties 7 to the rams 8 on the shield, fins 10 are extended to anchor the shield, and the sections are advanced singly or in groups by the rams 8. The fins are retracted and the shield is advanced by rams 4 which react on the sections. Adjacent sections may be connected by rams, and sleeves may be provided to bridge gaps between sections. For use in rock the fins are replaced by dowels engaging holes drilled into the rock. The movement of the shield may be prevented during advance of the sections by bracing the shield to the, jacking station, expanding the shield, providing the shield with a barbed surface, or providing the shield with endless bands running on ratchet wheels. The shield may be a suitably modified section.
