Abstract

1422668 Rock drills A SCHIESS 10 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 57163/73 Heading B3C [Also in Divisions E1-E2] A method of tunnelling into rock comprises arranging elongated rock drills in horizontally spaced apart relationship in the configuration of the desired tunnel, advancing the rock drills lengthwise by drilling into the rock to a distance of about twice the predetermined degree of advance of the face of the tunnel, supporting the drills externally of the rock face whilst they remain entered into the rock, blasting the rock within the volume contained by the drills to said predetermined degree of advance of the face, removing the blasted rock and repeating the cycle of operations. Preferably the drills involve hydraulically powered drilling heads 14 mounted on longitudinal ribbed rods, pipes or the like 10 mounted in a movable rig 12 so that the pressure on the drilling heads can be equalized. Cementitious material 20 can be applied to the roof and walls of the tunnel over the rear ends 18 of the rods 10, which rear ends can be retracted from the cementitious material when set.
