Abstract

506,917. Lining tunnels &c. REES, G. M. T. Dec. 6, 1937, No. 33679. [Class 85] Linings of tunnels, shafts, culverts, subways, and'the like are formed by supporting spaced rings of pre-formed concrete blocks by shuttering, filling the spaces between the rings with mixed concrete, ballast or like material, compressing said material to expand it laterally against the wall of the excavation, and finally grouting. Shuttering b is erected within the skin a of a tunnelling shield and a ring of concrete blocks d is erected in the,intervening space and spaced from the similar ring formed in the previous cycle of operations. Concrete, ballast; &c. f, is then filled in between the rings through openings c afterwards closed. By means of rams g, the shield is then advanced and the concrete, ballast, &c. is compressed, the latter then being grouted with a quicksetting cement with or without waterproofing material. An annulus i of rubber &c. may be placed between the rams and lining rings, and the shield may have additional rams bearing on inwardly-projecting, longitudinal, flanges b<1> of the shuttering. In wet ground, a sheet or sheets of plain or corrugated tin &c. may be placed between the shield and the rings of blocks d; with corrugated sheets, such corrugations as are not flattened by the pressure -may form drainage channels. The shuttering may be eccentric to the shield so that the upper part, of the lining has a greater thickness. Internally.threaded sockets k, Fig. 6, may be cast in the lining to support cable-carrying brackets &c. , screws l temporarily close the sockets.
