[Classes 68 (i) and 85] In making large tunnels by progressively driving a series of headings round the space to be occupied by the tunnel arch, and filling each heading as the excavation proceeds with a concrete structure c, a substan. tially central passage d is formed in each structure c for the passage of spoil and concrete. Feet b may be first formed in a similar manner. Lateral passages e may be formed at intervals for passage of spoil from adjacent headings. When the structures c are completed, the core of the tunnel is removed. In a modification, the headings and structures c are disposed circumferentiallv of the tunnel and the structures c may be of T-section. Specification 104,278, [Class 68 (i)], is referred to.
