Abstract

710,314. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 9, 1952 [May 25, 1951], No. 11770/52. Class 100 (4) Duplicating arrangements.-A continuous billing typewriter, Fig. 1, has a form carrying attachment including a retractable carbon sheet carrier 31 of the trolley type displaceable by an operating member 40 to withdraw carbon sheets from between typed bill forms and a stop 42 for limiting the retraction of the carrier, the operating member also being movable to release the stop and to allow repositioning thereof by movement of the carrier. The typewriter 10 is provided with a frame 13 having a rail 14 to support the travelling form carrying attachment which consists of a housing 16 having rollers 17, Fig. 2, running on the rail 14 and a guide strip 15 at right angles to the rail 14 The paper or forms are fed to the platen between adjustable side guides 27, 27a on transverse bars 26, 26a. The carbon sheet carrier 31 consists of a trolley having a number of rollers 32, 32a engaging the edge of the strip 15 and a central raised rib 15a thereon respectively. The sheets of carbon paper are attached to transverse blades 36 releasably secured to the carrier 31. Fixed to the strip 15 is a rack 41 on which the limit stop for the carrier is positioned, the stop having a part 42a adapted to enter between rack teeth to retain the stop in a set position. A spring arm 42c biases the part 42a to retaining position. The operating member 40 comprises two telescoping members 43, 50, member 43 being rotatable but not slidable in an upward extension 39 of the carrier. An arm 43a, Fig. 4, fixed to the end of member 43 has a projecting lug 43b engaged in the slotted end of a rocking lever 46 pivoted at 47 and connected to a link 48, Fig. 2. The stop has a notch 42d for engagement by the link and the arrangement is such that when the carrier is in its endmost position, as determined by the engagement between a buffer 143 and the stop, the end of the link 48 is aligned with the notch 42d. Rotation of the knob 55 on the operating member then causes the link to be displaced into engagement with the notch and the pressure swings the stop out of retaining position. Movement of the carrier will then move the stop to a new position. The two telescoping members 43, 50 are connected to prevent relative movement by a latch 52, Fig. 4, slidable in a transverse bore in member 50 to engage in one of a series of openings 43d in the member 43. The latch is controlled by the sloping end of a sliding, spring-loaded rod 53 slidable in a channel 50a in member 50 and displaceable to free the latch by finger pressure on a trigger portion 53b so that the effective length of the operating member may be altered. Web-cutting arrangements.-When used with fanfold forms, web splitters 37 are secured to the blades 36.
