The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved stop member and latching lever for holding the carbon carriage while stripping 4 Claims. Another object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable support for the guide member on which the carbon carriage is antifrictionally mounted.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2, a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken as indicated at line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the guide member with its adjustable stop and releasing lever; Fig. 4, a fragmentary side elevational view of the same; Fig. 5, a plan view of the stop member, taken as indicated at line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken as indicated at line 66 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 7, a vertical sectibnal view, taken as indicated at line 'I-'! of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment illustrated, a base plate 8 has at its rear portion upwardly extending arms 9 on which channel members In may be telescoped. A typewriter, not shown, may be placed on the base and positioned laterally by slidable positioning members II held by screws I2. Stop members I3 held by thumb screws I4 engage the rear of the typewriter to position it longitudinally on the plate.
A plate-like track I5 is secured to the channel members I0 by means of brackets I6. A shiftable carriage I! is provided, with top rollers I8 to engage the top edge of the plate I 5, and bottom rollers iii to engage the bottom edge of said plate. The carriage is also provided with a forwardly extending bracket 25, provided with a pair of rollers 2| to bear against the front face of the upper portion of the plate I5.
The shiftable carriage I! has a cross-bar 22 on which are mounted a pair of forwardly extending adjustable arms 23, to engage the ends of the typewriter carriage and cause the shiftable carriage to travel laterally with the typewriter carriage. The carriage I! also has a pair of upwardly extending fingers 24 which are adjustable laterally in slots 25, to accommodate diiferent widths of continuous-form stationery.
A rearwardly extending guide plate 25 has at its front end a pair of socket members 21 which make a hinged connection with the carriage H, by means of a fixed pintle 28 and a removable p-intle 29 having a thumb screw 39 making threaded engagement with the carriage. The guide member 26 hasbrackets 3| near its central portion, to which are pivotally, connected a pair of supporting links 32 which are provided at their lower ends with a connecting cross-bar 33'. The back of the shiftable carriage I! has a pair of notched uprights 34 to receive the cross-bar 33.

A carbon carriage 35 has grooved anti-friction rollers 36 which engage the lateral edges of the guide member 26 which serves as a track. The carbon carriage is shown in Fig. l, with a superstructure 31 provided with carbon-holding blades 38. This superstructure has its front edges held by hooks 39 and a spring-held catch 40, The guide member has a longitudinally extendin slot 5|, through which depends an L-shaped catch 42 from the carbon carriage 35.
A latch lever 43 is fulcrumed to the lower central portion of the guide member 25, as indicated at 44. A torsion spring 45 urges the front end of the lever upwardly. An actuating finger or arm 46 is carried by rearwardly extending arms 41, adjustably secured to the front end of the lever by means of brackets and screws 48.
The latch lever 43 has two bars connected at their rear ends at 49 and at their front ends by a bracket 55. The lower edges of the bars are,

with a selected pair of notches 5|. Thus, it will be understood that by squeezing the finger pieces 56 and 53 together, the stop member may be slid along the lever 43 to a desired longitudinal position. Also, when the carbon carriage slides backthe inclined portion of the hook 42 will raise the rear portion of the lever 43 against the action of the spring 45 and snap it into the position shown in Fig. 4., The carbon carriage may be released from the stop member by depressing the actuating finger 45.
The operation of the device is substantially the same as shown in my Patent 2,109,293. Continuous-form stationery strips with interleaved carbon sheets, held by the bars 35, are led from the back of the attachment to the platen roll. As the paper is fed under the platen roll, the finger 46 is depressed and automatically releases the carbon carriage, so that it may travel forwardly with the stationery. After a set of forms has been filled in, the stationery'is withdrawn from under the platen and the assembly will move backwardly until the carbon carriage is stopped and held by the stop member. The stationery strips are then drawn forwardly while the carbon sheets are held, stripping them into the next succeeding set of forms. After the completed set of forms is detached, the neXtset of forms is fed by the platen into writing position and the carbon carrier is again released automatically. The angle of the guide member 26 may be adjusted to a desired angle, depending upon the number and weight of the forms, so that the force of gravity will assist in sliding the carbon carriage back to its latching position. The present construction is much lighter and stronger than the earlier devices and requires no permanent connection with the typewriter.
If it is desired to remove-the rearwardly extending guide member, it is merely necessary to loosen the single screw'3ll and lift off the back section. p 7 The foregoing detailed description is given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, for some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. An attachment for adapting a typewriter to continuous-form stationery comprising: a stationary lateral track; a shiftable carriage mounted on said track and adapted to travel with the carriage of a typewriter, said shiftable carriage having on its rear portion an upwardly extending standard; a rearwardly extending guide member having its front end hinged to the shiftable carriage and provided with a forwardly extending supporting link adapted to adjustably engage said standard to regulate the inclination of said guide member; and a carbon carriage anti-frictionally mounted on the guide member for travel to and from said shiftable carriage.
2. An attachment as specified in claim 1, in which the standard is in the form of a pair of notched uprights, and the supporting link has at its front end a cross-bar adapted to engage selectively pairs of notches in said uprights.
3. An attachment as specified in claim 1, in which the guide member is provided with a for wardly extending latch lever having an actuating finger at its front end, a stop member adjustably ,mounted on said lever, and a catch on the carbon carriage adapted to engage said stop member and be locked against travel on the guide member until released by depressing said actuating finger.
4. A device as specified in claim 3, in which the latch lever is notched and positioned beneath the central portion of the guide member with the actuating finger extending above said guide member, the stop member is slidably mounted on the lever and has a detent to engage a selected notch in said lever, and the guide member has a longitudinally extending central slot through whichthe carbon carriage catch extends to engage said stop member.
