6 Claims.
This invention relates to typewriters adapted to ll in forms on continuous-form stationery, and more particularly to an improved device for holding carbon-strips interleaved with the stationery strips while the completed set of forms is advanced beyond the area served by the carbon-strips.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a carbon-holder which is movably mounted in rear of the platen so as to move forwardly with the stationery, and to provide means for holding the carbon-holder in its rearmost position to facilitate the transfer of the carbon from an advanced to a succeeding set of forms.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine with a depressible member which is adapt-ed to be automatically actuated by the stationery and serves to release the carbon-holder for forward movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a separate continuous-form stationery-holding attachment adapted to receive and cooperate with a standard typewriter without securing the attachment to the typewriter or altering the typewriter machine in any way.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved method of manipulating interleaved carbon-strips in continuous-form stationery.
The present invention is an improvement onr my copending application Serial No. 677 ,114, filed June 22, 1933.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a machine embodying the invention and applied to a typewriter which is indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modifiedform of device, taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a modied machine.
Referring to Figs. 1 3 of the drawings, A designates a base plate upon which a typewriter machine may be rested and equipped at its rear portion with an upwardly extending track support A; B, a traveling support to which is pivotally connected a carbon-holder B; and C, a depressible release member for unlatching the carbon-holder B to permit forward movement thereof.
The base A may be made of sheet metal and is equipped with a rib IB to which is slidably secured laterally extending typewriter positioning (Cl. 19V- 126) members Il. The latter members are equipped with slots I2 which are impaled by adjusting screws I3. Thus, it will be understood that the positioning members will be adjusted to engage the lateral portions of the main frame o f a typewriter and hold the same in proper relation with respect to the continuous-form attachment mechanism.
The track support A is inclined upwardly and forwardly and is rigidly held in position by means of a supporting bracket I4. A pair of transversely extending rails I5 are rigidly connected ha the support.
The traveling support B comprises an upward- 1y exending frame I6 which is equipped with grooved wheels |1, provided with ball-bearings and adapted to engage the tracks I5. Near the upper portion of the frame I6 are journaled a pair of sleeves I8. The sleeves are provided with square openings to which the inner end portions of the laterally extending arms I9 extend. The housings 20, which may be formed integrally with the frame IG, are provided with arcuate slots, and the sleeves are tapped to receive lingerscrews 2|. Said screws bear against the arms I9 and permit the same to be adjusted laterally. As the screws are mounted in the arcuate slots, not shown, said sleeves I8 and arms I9 may be tilted upwardly or downwardly with respect to the housings 20. Thus, it will be understood that after a typewriter has been placed in position on the supporting plate A, the arms I9 may be adjusted to engage the shiftable platen carriage and cause the traveling support B to shift therewith.
The frame I5 is further provided with a rearwardly extending U-shaped yoke 22 which limits the rearward travel of the carbon-holder B' which is pivotally connected to the frame I6 at 23. As shown in Fig. 3, the carbon-holder is urged to its rearmost position by means of a coil spring 24. The lower end of the frame I6 is provided with a U-shaped housing 25 which is held in position by screws 26 and encloses the spring 24. The upper end of the carbon-holder B is similarto the device described in my application mentioned above and includes a series of blades 21 around which one end of the carbonstrips is lturned and said blades extend cantileverwise into the fan-folded stationery strips 28. A pair of guide-fingers 29 hold the strips in proper lateral adjustment. The carbon-holder is latched in its rearmost position, automatically, by means of a pair of latch arms 30 which are urged upwardly by means of a spring 3l provided on the pivot support 32. The rear ends of the latch arms have cut-out portions 33 which are adapted to engage a cross-bar 34 provided on the arms of the carbon-holder B'. An upwardly extending slide-member 35 is provided with slots 36 which are impaled by guide-screws 31. The upper end of the slide-member 35 is provided with a presser-arm 38 which is adjustably secured thereon by means of a finger-screw 39. This adjustment enables the presser release member to be adapted to various heights of platen carriages. The lower end of the slide-member has a rearwardly extending portion 4U which engages the latch arms 30.
To operate the device, the fan-folded forms are interleaved with carbon-strips which are anchored at their rear ends on blades 21, and the loaded forms are led over the presser-member 38 to the platen-roll and feed-mechanism of the typewriter. As the typewriter roll advances the paper, the strips will be tensioned between the platen-roll and the carbon-holder which will cause the member 38 to be depressed and .permit the carbon-holder to swing forwardly with the stationery as it is advanced by the feed-mechanism. After a set of forms has been filled in, the platen-roll is backed up and the ends of the strips are raised suflciently to clear the member 38. The carbon-holder will swing back and be automatically latched by the arms 30 so that by drawing the ends of the completed set of forms forwardly, the carbons will be stripped back into the next succeeding set of forms. The completed set of forms may then be detached and a freshly loaded Set of forms advanced into typing position as explained above. l
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the platen carriage is provided with a rearward extension upon which is slidably mounted a carbonholder B2 equipped with roller members 41. The carbon-holder B2 is provided with guide-fingers 48 on which is journaled a guide-roller 49. A suitable spring reel 50 is connected to the carriage B2 and urges it to its rearmost position. The carriage is provided with a downwardly extending hook 5| which is adapted to be engaged by the latch member 52 which is pivotally mounted on the extension 45 at 53. The frontend of the latch member is turned upwardly and provided with a presser-member 54 which is adapted to be depressed by the tensioned strips in substantially the same manner as described in the preferred form above.- The rearward extension is supported by means of a grooved roller 55 which rests on the transversely disposed track 56. Said track is mounted on and held in proper spaced relation to the typewriter by means of forwardly extending arms 51 which are equipped at their front ends with sockets 58 adapted to receive the rear legs of the standard typewriter machine. It will be understood that the operation of the device is substantially the same as that of the preferred form except that the carbon-holder slides forwardly instead of being rocked forwardly.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, inview of the prior art.
I claim:
l. In combination in a duplicating machine equipped with a platen over which stationery strips interleaved with carbon-strips may be drawn: a forwardly movable carbon-holder disposed in rear of said platen; means for latching said holder in retracted position; and releasemeans operable by downward pressure of the strips', for actuating the latching means to permit forward movement of the carbon-holder.
2. In a machine of the character set forth: a base plate, upon which a typewriting machine having a shiftable platen may be placed, said plate having an upwardly extending support at its rear portion provided with a transversely disposed track, said plate having laterally adjustable typewriter-positioning members; a carbon-carriage slidably mounted on said track and having forwardly extending arms adapted to engage said platen carriage, said arms being swivally mounted on the platen carriage and being laterally adjustable; a forwardly movable carbon-holder mounted on said carbon-carriage; means for holding said carbon-holder in retracted position; and release-means for permitting forward movement of the carbon-holder, said release-means being depressible by strips advancing to the platen-carriage.
3. In combination: a typewriting machine having a main frame and a platen to which stationery strips interleaved with carbon strips may be led;
holding it against oscillation when the latter is swung to its rearmost position; and actuating means for releasing the carbon-holder, including an arm depressible by the strips.
4. In combination: a typewriter having a main frame and a shiftable carriage equipped with a platen roll around which stationery strips interleaved with carbon-strips may be led; a carbonholder slidably mounted for forward movement on a rearward extension of said carriage; means for holding said carbon-holder in rearmost position; and release-means for permitting forward movement of said carbon-holder comprising a member depressible by said strips.
5. Mechanism as specified in claim 4, in which a transversely disposed track is provided to support the rearward extension of said carriage, said track having forwardly extending arms having sockets adapted to receive rear legs provided on the main frame of said typewriting machine.
6. Mechanism as specified in claim 4, in which the release member is longitudinally disposed and pivotally mounted on the rearward extension of the platen-carriage, said member having a depressible transverse arm at its front end and a latch at its rear end for engaging the carbonholder.
