4. Claims 1 The present invention relates to an appliance on typewriting, calculating or bookkeeping machines to position and adjust a top sheet in front of one or more basic sheets present in the machine, the appliance being fitted with members, by manipulating which a; hole is made in each top sheet after an entry has been recorded, the said hole serving as setting means for the next entry, in that when again introducing a top sheet a feeler pin engages automatically in this hole and thereby holds the top sheet at the required line height.
Known devices of this kind have the. drawback that the position of themembers making the hole in the top sheet and the position of the feeler pin with regard to the basic sheet inserted in the typewriting, calculating or bookkeepin machine, are unchangeable.
This drawback is removed with the appliance according to the invention in that the stops for the lateral edges of the top sheet and also the members for making the holes in the top sheet, as well as the feeler pin, are arranged to be displaceable and adjustable along the paper guiding means for the top sheet.
In the accompanying drawing one example of execution of an appliance according to the invention is illustrated, this being a detachable form of the appliance which can be connected to the typewriting, calculating or bookkeeping machine.

According to the drawing, the appliance comprises the rail I which is right-angular in crosssection and to which at both ends arms 2 and 3 are fixed, by means of which the appliance can be detachably fixed to a typewriting, bookkeeping or calculating machine. For this purpose, on these machines a pin 4 is fitted at one side, and a pin 5 is fitted at the other side with a knob I arranged on it adjustable against the action of a spring 6. The arm 3 has a bore 8 for receiving the pin 4 and the arm 2 a slot 9 open below for introducing the pin 5. A disc III, fitted on the arm 2 and also provided with a slot, has a recess II in which the knob I partly enters and thus secures the arm 2 on the pin 5.
Along the upright shoulder of the rail I, two plates I2 are visible, to which pieces of sheet metal I2, angle-shaped in cross-section, are fixed. Screws I3, which pass through longitu- 2 dinal slots I4 in the rail I, can be screwed into the plates I2 and allow the plates I2 to be firmly clamped with the sheet-metal pieces IZ" in their set position on the rail I. These sheetmetal pieces form the guides for the lateral edges of the top sheets.
At a distance from the upright arm of the rail I and running parallel to. it, a plate I5 preferably made of transparent material, is. fitted; which forms, with the sheet-metal pieces i2." the guideway' for the top sheets. An opening I6 in the plate I5 and in the. rail I allows passage of the end of the type-lever carrying the types of the type-writing, bookkeeping or calculating machine, in order that the type. may strike against the roller.
On the rear side of the rail I, a, shaft IT with guide rollers I8 (omitted in Fig. 3) is fitted,
which rest against the platen of the machine.
and hold the appliance in its proper position. A double lever 20, capable of oscillating, on the arm 2- against the action of a spring I9; has. a hook 2I at its lower end, which hook can be engaged under the shaft of the platen.
To the sheet-metal piece I2 or the plate I2 situated at the left in the drawing, a casing 22 is connected, in which a punching stamp 23 is adjustable against the action of a spring 24. The casing 22 passes through a longitudinal slot I in the rail I. Opposite the punch 23 is a matrix 25 in a casing 26 for taking the pieces punched out of the top sheets; this matrix is connected by means of a part 2! to the plate I2. A cover 29, which can be opened against the action of a spring 28, allows the punched pieces to be removed from the casing 26.
For operating the punching stamp 23 a plate 30 supported to swivel about one of its longitudinal edges is provided, one end of which carries a lever arm 3I. The plate 30 is supported in a bearing 32 on the arm 2 and in a bearing 33 on the rail I.
With the lever arm 3I an operating hook 34 co-operates which is pivotally supported on a slide 35 carried displaceably on the arm 2. A hand lever 36, which is fitted on a shaft 31, allows the operating hook 34 to be set into the chain-dotted position shown in the drawing, in which position it is out of reach of the arm III.
The slide 35 has an arm 35 directed downwards and a tension spring 38 tends to keep the slide in the position shown in the drawing (Fig. 3). The arm 35 serves for adjusting the slide 35 at each operation of the line-space lever 39 (Fig. 2), this being effected through a push rod 40, which is provided with a pin (not shown in the drawing) engaging the arm 35. The displacing of the slide 35, with the operating hook engaged, causes an oscillating of the arm 3| and thereby of the plate 30, which in its turn displaces the pin 23 and thus punches a hole in the top sheet.
On the casing 26 a 3-armed lever 4| is fitted which can swivel round the bolt 42. A side arm of this lever carries a weight 43, a lower arm carries a stop 44 sloping obliquely downwards, and an arm directed upwards carries a feeler member 45. The weight 43 tends to swivel the lever 4| so that the end of the stop 44 lies under the space between the rail and the plate l5 and the feeler member 45 outside the said space. Fig. 3 shows a middle position of the lever 4|. The ieeler member 45 is fitted on a plate 46 which is pivotally supported round a pin 41 on the lever 4|, a weight 48 tending to swivel the plate 46 in such a way that a stop 49 on the plate 46 lies on the edge of the lever 4|. On the plate l2 a projection 50 is provided opposite to and somewhat above the feeler member 45.
When introducing the top sheet into the slitshaped opening between the sheet-metal pieces I2 and the plate l5, the projection 50 moves the sheet against the plate |5, and the lower edge of the sheet presses the lever 4| back so that the feeler member comes to lie against the sheet.
After finishing the writing of a line on a top sheet and thereby through carbon paper also on to the basic sheet, the line-space lever 39 is operated. The slide 35 is thereby displaced and thus also the plate 30 and the pin 23 which punches a hole in the top sheet.
After the top sheet has been moved by the line-spacing mechanism the feeler member 45 falls into the previously punched hole, so that the proper spacing is always maintained between the lines.
What I claim is:
1. An appliance on typewriting, calculating or bookkeeping machines for positioning and adjusting a top sheet in front of one or more basic sheets present in the machine, said appliance comprising members for punching a hole in each top sheet after an entry has been recorded, said hole serving as setting means for the next entry, a feeler pin automatically fitting into said hole for the insertion of a top sheet thereby holding the top sheet at the required line height, paper guiding means for the top sheet, and guides for the lateral edges of the top sheet, said members, feeler pin and guides being displaceable and adjustable along said paper guiding means for the top sheet.
2. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 having a line space lever, a plate mounted so as to swivel around a longitudinal edge on the paper guiding means, a lever arm carried by said plate, an operating hook movable by said line space lever, said lever arm projecting into the path of said hook, the members for punching holes in the top sheet being movable along said plate.
3. An appliance as claimed in claim 2 having a lever arm for swivelling said operating hook in and out of range of said lever arm for the plate.
4. An appliance as claimed in claim 3 having a weighted lever acting on said feeler pin and adapted to swivel on a second weighted lever.
