Abstract

657,108. Typewriters. EGRY. Ltd. March 25, 1948, No.8850. Convention date, March 29, 1947. [Class 100 (iv)] In a manifolding attachment for typing on a number of continuous paper webs 34, a paper guide frame 3 which participates in the movements of the typewriter carriage 2, has displaceable along it a slide 18 having paper web grippers 21, 22, which anchor the paper webs when at one end of the frame and release the paper webs at the other end ; the frame 3 carries also a slidable member 6, movable towards and away from the platen, and over which the paper webs pass to the platen, and chains or bands 13 secured at one end to the frame 3 and at the other to a carbon sheet carrier 14. The member 6 has rollers 7 on each side which engage and travel on tracks formed by the H-bars of the frame 3, and a lug 8 on each side, each having a bearing hole so that the member 6 may slide up and down on rods 9 fixed to the frame 3. A spring 10 surrounds each rod 9 maintaining the member 6 normally in a raised position as shown. Paper webs 34 are threaded through the grippers which comprise an angle rail 21 and a pivotal blade 22 coacting therewith by the action of a forked arm 25 having segment teeth 28 engaging corresponding segment teeth 29 on an arm 31 pivotally mounted on the slide 18. With the slide 18 in its uppermost position on the frame against a stop 20, the webs are led from the grippers over a roller 11 on the member 6 and are gripped by the platen 35. Advancement of the platen causes the member 6 to be lowered, and during this movement a pin 32 thereon engages the arm 31 causing arm 25 to open the gripper blade 22, thus allowing the slide 18 to fall to the bottom of the frame track. At the lower end a stop 33 engages the arm 31 to close the grippers again. The carbon sheets 17, advanced with the webs, will by now have been gripped by the platen and during continued feed by the platen during typing the member 6 is further lowered by the pull on the chains 13 extending from the carbon carrier 14 over the roller 11 to an anchorage on the frame 3. When typing is completed the webs and carbon sheets are wound back until the latter are released from the platen, whereupon the member 6 rises to its initial position. The webs are now fed forward by the platen and since the webs are gripped by the members 21, 22, the slide 18 is moved back to its original position while the carbon sheets remain stationary ; the device is then ready for typing the next set of sheets.
