-Be it known that HERBERT E. BRIDG- wiiricin citizen of the United tates,V and re ident of Syracuse, in the county of @non` daga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in rilypewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. i.
' My invention rela-testo typewriting and like iacliinves, and more particularly to paper feeding means for such machines.
' The object ofthe invention, generally stated, is to provide a simple, inexpensive and highly efficient paper feed device which my be readily shifted to effective or ineffective position as may be desired, and by the mere act of thus shifting the `device bringing into4 action means for effectively holding the device `in either of such positions.v Y l "Stated more specifically, an object of the inventionis to provide a simple and edective auxiliary vpaper feedor pressure device which may be maintained underV spring pressure against the front of the platen or the paper thereon, and which, when it is desired to dispense withr the use of such device, may be readily shifted to a position. at a considerable distance away from the platen where it may be maintained free from interference with the vwork sheets.`

I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance. in a Monarch'typewriting machine equipped for use with Wahl l adding mechanism, Ysaid machine embodying inventions of Frederick A. Hart, Serial No. 630,226, filed April 6,' 1923, although the paper feed device of my invention vis not restricted to its use in such a machine but may be employed in various makes of typewriting or like machines..
In the accompanying drawings I have shown only so much of the machine referred to as is necessary to arrive at an understanding of my invention in its embodiment therein. p

forwardedge 370'ofthe'slide'reaelies'apointfi j VVspring from t-he exertion of an undue strain thereon which would weaken it and render the retraction ofA the slide more difficult and makes it possible to utilize the force of the spring to more veffectively press the feed roller 23 against the platen or the paper thereon; and it enables a much smaller spring to be employed than` would otherwise be necessarv in a construction where it is desirable to move the roller as far away from the platen as in the present case.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention as it is defined in vthe accompanying claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen,'a carrier mounted to slide towards and away from the platen, a paper feed device carried by said carrier, and a spring pressed pivoted member coacting with said carrier and automatically operative to hold it under spring pressure in either its projected position of use with said feed device bearing against the platen or in the retracted ineffective position depending on which position the carrier may be shifted to by hand.
2. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a carrier mounted to slide towards and away from the platen, a paper feed roller 'carried by said slide, a spring', and meansY for directing the force of said .spring either endwisey on said carrier or transversely thereof jas may be desired, thereby holding the carrier under spring pressure in either its effective or ineffective position.
3. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a carrier mounted to slide towards and away from 'the platen, a paper feed roller carried by said carrier, an arm pivoted on a relatively fixed part below said carrier and co-acting either with Y the bottom or with one end thereof depending on the position to which the carrier is moved relatively to saidarm, and a spring connected to said arm.
l. In a typewriting or like machine. the combination of a carriage, a platen, a fixed support on the carriage, Va slide mounted on said support for sliding movement towards and awa-y from the platen, a paper feed device carried by-said slide and movable therewith into and'out of position of use, and a spring pressed controlling member co-actwith the slide to exert a lateral pressure thereon when the slide is moved out of position of use and to exert an endwise pressure on the slide wnen the latter is in position of use.
5. In a type-writing or like machine, the combination of acarriage, a platen carried thereby, a fixed support on the carriage, a slide mounted on said support for movement fore `and aft of the machine and into and out of position of use, a paper feed roller carried by said slide and movable by the slide into and ont of contact with the platen, and a spring pressed controlling member that automatically exerts a pressure on the slide either transversely of the path of its movement or in the direction of its path of movement depending on the position to which said slide is moved by hand. 6. In a typewriting or likeV machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a. sheet metal bracket detachably Xed to the carriage, a sheet metal slide mounted for sliding movement only on said bracket into and out of position of use, a paper feed device carried-by said slide at 'one end thereof and moved by the slide into or out of contact with the platen depending` on the direction in which the slide is shifted, a spring, and means for directing the force of said spring either endwise or laterally against the slide depending' on the position to which it is moved by hand, whereby the force of the spring` is directed at one time to press the paper feed device against the platen and at anotherl time to hold said device away from the platen.
7. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a bracket secured to the carriage and extending transversely of the platen, a carrier mounted on said bracket to slide thereon towards and away from the platen, a paper feed device carried by said carrier and moved thereby into and out of contact with the platen or the paper thereon, a spring, and means whereby the position of the carrier automatically directs the effective force of the spring` either to force the feed device against the platen or to hold it away from the platen in its retracted position.
8. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a yoke-like sheet metal bracket secured at its ends to the. carriage infront of the platen and extending fore-and-aft of the machine, a carrier mounted on said bracket to slide fore-and-aft of the machine, a paper feed device carried by said carrier and moved thereby into and'out of contact with the platen or the paper thereon, a spring, and means whereby the position of the carrier on the bracket directs the effective force of the spring either to slide the carrier towards and cause the feed device to bear against the platen or to hold Ydi . the slide in its retracted position with the i''eed device out of Contact with the platen.
