To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anonrnns S. DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 1m )rovements in 'lypeJ Vriting achines, of w rich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a line-space mechanism and mechanism for; actuating the feed rolls of a typewriting machine.
t is customary in typewriting machines to provide in connection with the feed rolls which bear against the platen, a releasing lever and intermediate mechanism for lifting the feed rolls from the ing them in position to permit the worksheets to be removed. If the operator neglects to return the feed rolls, the ensuing operation of the linespace lever does not resuit in proper feeding of the paper.
An object of the invention is to obviate this objection. To this end I provide means in connection with the linespace mechanism for automatically returning the feed rolls .to the platen before the latter can. be rotated by the same stroke of the'linespace lever.
L The line-space lever is connected to a rock shaft having a finger to engage an arm of the pressure-roll releasing lever, and restore the latter during the preliminary movement of the'line-space lever and before the latter operates to rotate the platen. The arrangement insures the pressure feed rolls always being in operative position prior to the rotation of the platen by "the line-spacelever.
Another feature of the invention is in the nature of in iin 'irovedform of linespacing mechanism. The shaft of the linespace lever carrie a pinion meshing with a rack on a slidable plate provided with a second rack which actuates a second pinion carried by a pawl lever. The pawl oirsaid.

In the accompanying drawings, is a perspective viewof the line-space incohanism and feed roll actuating mechanism of a typewriting machine constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. The invention is herein shown applied to an L. Cf Smith 8: Bros. typewriting n1a-- chine, although the principles of the invention are applicable to other machines. The rotary platen 1 is mounted on a platen axle 2 in the, platen frame 3. Beneath the platen are pressure roll frames 4 and 5, carrying the front and rear pressure feed rolls (5 and 6* respectively. These frames are con nccted by pivots 7 to cross bars 8 of the platen frame, and springs S) bear against the frames to hold the feed rolls in contact with the platen or work-sheets. Behind the frame 5 is a rock shaft 10 extending longitudinally of the platen and journaled in the platen frame. Arms or hooks 12 adjustably secured to the shaft 10 by set screws 13 bear at their forward ends upon the frame 5.
0n the end of the rock shaft 10 is an arm 14- carrying an anti-friction roller 15 which works in a cam slot 16 formed in a lever 17 connected by a pivot 18 to the platen frame. cam surface 19 which, as the lever 17 is depressed or swung forward from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3, depresses the rock arm 14, thereby rocking the shaft 10, and through the arms 12 wings the frame 5 downwardly and releases the rear rolls 6 from the platen. This movement of the frame 5 operates through contacting lugs 20 on the frames 5 and 4 to swing the latter frame about its pivot 7 and release the front rolls 6 from the platen.
he cam surface 19 provides at its forward end a shoulder 21 against which the roller meshes with a segmental pinion 52.) on the 110 hub of a lever or rock arm to the upper end of which is pivoted a dog or pawl 31 which cooperates with a line-space ratchet wheel 32 secured to the platen. The ,pawl 31 carries a pin 33 which slides on an adjustable cam 34. to hold the pawl off the linespace wheel during the initial movement of the pawl, and permitting rotation of the platen a distance of one or more line spaces, depending on the adjustment of the cam.

- permitting the springs 9 to move the pressure rolls against the platen and to complete the return movement of the lever 17. This release of the lever 17 takes place during the initial movement of the line-space lever, and before the pawl 31 has engaged the line-space wheel, so that the automatic return of the pressure rolls prior to the retation of the platen is insured. The lever 17 can, of course, be released by hand, independently of the line-space mechanism.
Variations may be resorted to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used Without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a pressure roll frame, pressure rolls thereon bearing against the platen, a rock shaft, connections between said rock shaft and frame for operating the latter, a lever having a cam to rock said shaft in the movement of said lever in one direction to thereby release the pressure rolls from the platen, means on said cam to hold said lever in the position to which moved, a line-space lever, and means operated thereby to return said first-named lever.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a pressure roll frame, a rock shaft, arms thereon in position to operate said frame, a releasing lover, a cam thereon, a rock arm on said rock shaft actuated by said cam, said rock arm and releasing lever being locked by the cam, a line space lever, and means operated thereby to release said releasing lever.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination witha rotary platen, of a pressure roll frame, a rock shaft, means; thereon for operating said frame, an arm 'on said rock shaft, a releasing lever having a cam to rock said arm and thereby operate said frame and hold the latter and the releasing lever in released position, a line-space lever, and means operated thereby to release said releasing lever.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame having a rotary platen, of a line-space wheel connected thereto, a rack plate, pinions meshing with racks on said plate, a line-space lever connected to one of said pinions, and a pawl! mounted on the platen frame operatively connected to the other pinion for actuating the line-space wheel with the direct manually impelled movement of said lever.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a line-space wheel connected thereto, a rack plate, pinions in mesh with racks on said plate, said pinions being in planes perpendicular to each other, a line-space lever connected to one of said pinions, a swinging arm connected to the other pinion, and a line-space pawl carried by said arm.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a rotary platen, a line-space wheel, a platen frame, a rock shaft journaled in said frame and extending in a direction transverse to that of the platen axle, a lever secured to said rock shaft, a pinion on said rock shaft, a rack plate having a rack in mesh with said pinion, a second rack on said plate, a pinion in mesh with said second rack, a rock arm connected to said second pinion, and a pawl pivoted to the rock arm and cooperating with the linespace wheel.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a line-space wheel secured thereto, a line-space lever movable in a vertical plane parallel with the platen axle, a pawl movable in a direction transverse to the platen axle and adapted to engage the line-space wheel, a swinging arm carrying said pawl, and a rack and pinion mechanism forming a connection between said swinging arm and the line-space lever.
S. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a line-spaee wheel thereon, a Vertically slidable rack plate having racks thereon, a rock shaft journaled in the platen frame and extending transversely of the platen axle, a pinion on said rock shaft meshing with a rack on said plate, a second pinion meshing with a second rack on said plate and having an axis parallel with the platcn axle, a rock arm connected to said second pinion, and a pawl carried by said rock arm and cotiperating with the linesspace wheel.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a line-space said feed rolls to release them from the? platen, a pivotal lever having a cam, an arm extending from said releasing rook shaft and engaged With said cam to be actufiled thereby 1n the movement of said pivotal ever, which carrles said line-space lever to engage said releasing lever and return it to normal position in the initial portion of movement of said line-space lever, whereby said cam is shifted to allow the return of the feed rolls to the platen.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of a line-space lever, a rock shaft carrying said lever, feed rolls normally spring-pressed against said platen, a rock shaft having connections with said feed rolls to 'release them .from the and an extension from the rock shaft platen, a pivotal lever havinga cam, an arm extending from said releasing rock 20 shaft and engaged with said cam to be actu ated thereby in the movement of said pivotal lever, a shoulder on said cam to look said arm in the released position of. the rolls, and
