Abstract

389,362. Type-bar-making machines. GJAERDER, A., 48, Mollergaten, Oslo, Norway. July 29, 1932, No. 21439. [Class 100 (iii).] Proof-taking apparatus.-In apparatus for taking proofs in type-bar-making machines, of the kind wherein directly outside the type-bar delivery channel a paper strip is arranged and supported by a yielding platen to receive the impression directly, or through ink ribbon during the motion of the type-bar between the delivery channel and the galley, the platen is so arranged at a short distance from the mouth of the delivery channel that it is struck by the type-bar during the first part of its travel out from the channel, and is pushed completely or partly back thereby during impression, the platen being maintained in a withdrawn position allowing the succeeding endwise motion of the type-bar into the galley. The type-bar 2 in its passage from the delivery channel 3 to the galley 4 strikes against an ink-ribbon 7 and presses this against a paper ribbon 6 which passes over a yielding platen 5. The paper-feeding mechanism, ink-ribbon, and platen are carried by a frame 8, which under the pressure of the type-bar slides back in stationary guides 11, 12 against the action of springs 34, 35 until a pin 26 on the frame 8 engages beneath a spring hook 28, when the whole is held stationary in its withdrawn position to allow the type-bar to move sidewise into the galley 4. The frame is then released to move back into its proof-taking position by a projection 42 on a periodically moved member such as the elevator 43, which rotates a bar 40 through a lever 41, and thereby causes an arm 37 to swing the hook 28 to the left to release the pin 26. During this upward movement the paper is advanced by the pawl-andratchet mechanism 19, 20, while the ink ribbon 7 is advanced by a mechanism similar to that used in typewriters. One side of the frame 8 carries a bar 30 which slides in a fixed guidebolt 31 and is provided with nuts 32, 33 for adjusting the position of the platen relative to the channel 3. In a modification, the frame is held frictionally against movements in the backward direction until the pressure of the type-bar becomes excessive, when the frictional resistance is overcome ; the completion of the backward movement and the ensuing forward movement is effected by a rod attached to one end of the frame actuated through linkage from a cam surface carried by the elevator 43, which causes the frame to move back more quickly than the type-bar is ejected so that the latter may move sideways to the galley. The pressure of the type-bar may be assisted by a rod which moves with the mechanism ejecting the type-bar and presses against a projection carried by the frame as soon as the proof has been effected, the retraction of frame being assisted by a tensioned spring. The ratchet feed for the paper strip may be adjusted to vary the length of paper fed at each reciprocation.
