which I declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cash registers and has more particular relation to the ribbon feeding mechanism thereof.
The principal object of this invention is to" provide mechanism which will cause a strip or ribbon to receive at certain times a movement considerably greater in extentthan its usual feeding movement.
It is a specific object of this invention to provide in addition to a regular feeding means, a special feeding means operative to move an inking ribbon an additional extent as its seam approaches a printing line, to prevent an impression through said seam.
With these and incidental objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification.

This invention'is shown "in connection with an inking ribbon mechanism of a machine such as illustrated in the patent to E. J. Von Pein, No..1,198,492, issued Sept. 19, 1916. It is not desired, however, to limit the mvention to use with inking ribbons only, as it might be equally applicable to any'kind of ribbon or strip with the object of moving it greater distances during certain operations.
The various elements of the printing mechanism are supported by a frame 20 which forms the side frame of the cash a register.
There are a plurality of type wheels 21 (Fig. 1) mounted on a series of telescopic sleeves 22 supported bya shaft 23. These type. wheels are differentially set by the action of the cash registerin a manner well known in the art. They are provided with duplicate type faces so that two impressions can be made therefrom simultaneously.
For the purpose of making these impressions', an upper platen 24 and a lower. platen 25 are provided. The upper platen 24 is adapted to print on a detail strip 26 which is carried by suitable storage and receiving rolls (not shown). The strip passes about a roller 27 ,then between the platen 24 and type wheels 21, and then about another guide roller 28, as seen in Fig. 1.
The platen 24 is mounted in a U-shaped member 30 having a projecting portion 31 pivoted to an arm 32 fast on a shaft 33. This shaft is given a counter-clockwise movement at the proper time by any suitable mechanism' to bring the upper platen 24 into contact with the type wheels to take an impression therefrom.
The lower platen 25 is mounted in a U- shaped member 35,- which in turn is supported by a bar 36. Integral with the bar 36 is a downwardly extending arm 37 which is pivotally connected to an arm 38 fast on a shaft 39. Also integral with the bar 36 is a projecting car 40 carrying a pin 41 which lies between two ribs 42 integral with the side frame 20. At the proper time in the operation of the machine the shaft 39,
is given a counter-clockwise movement by any suitable mechanism. This movement, through arm 38 and member 36, raises the platen 25, which is guided by the cooperation of the pin 41- with the ribs 42. The,
platen is raised far enough to take an impression from the type wheels on an; in-
serted slip which is placed upon a table 43 (Fi .1) provided for that purpose. The impression of both the upper and lower platens is taken through a continuous inking ribbon 50. This ribbon passes about an inking roller 51 loose on a rod 52 projecting from frame 20. From the inking roller the ribbon passes to the left over a rod 53,
then between the upper platen and the type wheels, and then about a roller 54 carried by a rod 55. The ribbon then moves down- .wardly and passes about a rollefi56 on a rod 57 and towards the right between the type wheels and the-lower laten. It then passes under a rod 58 an to the inking roller 51.
The ribbon is fed a predetermined dis tance on each operation to bring a freshly inked surface over the type faces from which the impressions are to be taken. This feeding is accomplished in the following manner. Fast to the end of the inking roller 51 is a ratchet 60. Cooperating with this ratchet is a feeding pawl 61 which is held in contact with the ratchet by a spring. A springpressed retaining pawl also cooperates with said ratchet to prevent backward movement thereof. The pawl 61 is pivoted to a bell crank lever 63 mounted on a stud projecting from frame 20. The other arm of this bell crank lever carries a roller 64 cooperating with a cam groove 65 in a cam disk 66 fast on a shaft 67. This disk is given one complete counter-clockwise rotation as an incident to the operation of the cash register. This movement will rock the bell crank lever counter-clockwise and move the pawl 61 towards the right. The nose of the pawl being in contact withthe ratchet, said ratchet will be moved in a counter-clockwise direction and will advance the inking ribbon one step so that a freshly inked surface will be moved into position opposite each of the platens.
The inking ribbon has a seam extending transversely thereof, and it is evident that this seam would cause a blurred impression if it came to rest directly opposite one of the platens. In order toprevent the occurrence of this condition the following mechanism is provided. A narrow metal bar 70 is fastened to the ribbon on the said seam as shown in Fig.2. On the left hand side this 'bar extends a short distance beyond the edge of the ribbon. A member 71 is adapted to slide on the rod 53 and at its rear end is pivoted to one arm of a bell crank lever 72. This lever is pivoted on a stud 7 3 projecting from frame 20 and the other arm thereof carries a roller 74 which extends into a cam slot 75 in a disk 76 fast on a shaft 77. This shaft is given a complete clockwise rotation on every operation of the machine, which movement rocks the bell crank clockwise and moves the member 71 horizontally towards the left and then back to its normal position. The member 71 has two projecting arms 78 and 79. The upper arm 78 has a shoulder 80, which, when the seam on the ribbonis in such a position that the upper platen would strike it on the next operation, engages the projecting end of the bar 70. Then when the member 71 is given its movement towards the left the ribbon will be carried therewith and the seam will be moved past the platen to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that a smooth surface of the ribbon is in position for the next impression. Likewisewhen the seam approaches the lower platen, the lower arm 79 of member 71, which is formed with a hook at its end to present a rearwardly facing shoulder 81, engages the projecting portion of the bar 70, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the member 71 is moved towards the right, pulls the seam past the lower platen.
It is obvious that member 71 will be moved to the same extent on every operation, but it will have no effect on the ribbon unless the seam is in one of the two positions just in front of either the upper or the lower platens.
Rearwardly of the shoulders 80 and 81 are inclined surfaces or'guides 82 and 83 which permit the shoulders 80 and 81 to move past the end of the strip 70 into position to engage the strip and move it forward past the impression means.
\Vhile the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
lVhat is claimed is:
-l. The combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an endless inking ribbon provided with a seam, a support for said ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon about its support, a bar secured to said ribbon, a special feeding member comprising shoulders facing in the direction of travel of said bar, and guides on said shoulders to facilitate the movement of said bar into position in front of said shoulders.
2. The combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an eridlessjnking ribbon provided with a seam, a support for said ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon about. its support, a bar secured to said ribbon, and a special feeding member comprising shoulders facing in the direction of travel of said bar, and guides to facilitate the movement of said bar into position in front of said shoulders.
3. The combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an endless inking ribbon provided with a seam, a support for said ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon about said bar is moved in opposite directions toward said type characters.
5. The combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an inking ribbon cooperating therewith, a seamtherein, a reciproeating pitman, shoulders on' said pitman facing in opposite directions, and a single means on said ribbon adapted to cooperate with said shoulders to prevent impressions through said seams from said type characters. v I
6. The combination of type characters, an inking ribbon provided with a seam, a reciprocating member for feeding said ribbon to prevent an impression through-said seam, two spaced feeding arms on said memher, and means on said ribbon for cooperating with either of said arms.
7. The combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an inking ribbon mounted to cooperate with both sets and movable relatively oppositely across said type characters, a scam in said ribbon, a bifurcated pitman for feeding said ribbon to prevent an impression through said seam, and a 'bar on said ribbon for rendering said pitman effective to feed the ribbon as the seam approaches any'set of type characters.
8. The combination 'of a plurality of sets of type characters, impression means for taking an impression from each set during an operation of the machine, an inkingribbon provided with a seam, means for feeding the seam past the type characters to prevent an impression through said seam, and a single means carried 'by said ribbon for rendering said feeding m'eans effective to feed the ribbon 'asthe seam approaches any set of type characters.
9. In a machine of the class described, the combination 'ofa lurality of sets of type characters, an inking ribbon provided with a seam, means for feeding said ribbon to prevent an impression through said seam from any set of type characters, and means on said ribbon with which said feeding means cooperates as the ribbon approaches any one ofsaid sets of type characters.
10. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a plurality of sets of type characters, an inking ribbon cooperating with all of said sets, a scam in said ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon during each operation of the machine, and means for feeding said ribbon to prevent an im pression through said seam from any'set of type characters.
. 11. The combination of an inking ribbon,
a roller feeding means therefor, a reciproeating feeding means, and a -bar on said ri bon adaptedto' be fed into cooperative relation to said second means by'said first means.
12. The combination of an inking ribbon, a roller feeding means, a second feeding means, and means secured to said ribbon w adapted to be moved by said roller feeding means into position .to be moved by said second feeding means.
13. The combination of an inking ribbon, a roller feeding means therefor, a second feeding means, and means on said ribbon with which said second feeding means is adapted to cooperate.
14. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an inking ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon a certain distance during 'each operation of the machine, special means for feeding said ribbon an additional extent, and means on the ribbon for' controlling the effectiveness of said special feeding means.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an inking ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon a certain distance during each operation of the machine, special means for feeding said ribbon an additional extent in the same direction, and means for controlling the effectiveness-of said special feeding means.
16. The combination of an inkingribbon,
a scam in said ribbon, type elements, means for feeding said ribbon over said type elements, and means operable independently of said feeding means for preventing said sea-m from being left opposite said elements.
17. The combination of an inking ribbon provided with a seam, type elements, means for feeding said ribbon, and means carried by said ribbon for cooperating with said feeding means as the seam approaches the type elements to move the seam past the type elements.

24. The combination of a ribbon, normally operable means for feeding the ribbon in a given direction, a second means for feeding the ribbon in the same direction, and means carried by the ribbon for controlling the eifectivity of said second feeding means on the ribbon.
25. The combination of a ribbon, normally operable means for feeding the ribbon in a given direction, and a second feeding means operating automatically for feeding the ribbon a greater rection.
26. The combination of a ribbon, normally operable feeding means therefor, and a second feeding means effective under control of said ribbon for feeding the ribbon in the same direction as the first feeding means.
27. In a machine of the class described, the combination of recording elements, a ribbon, means for feeding the same during each operation of the machine, means for feeding the same an additional extent after a certain length of ribbon has been fed past said recording elements, and means on said ribbon for rendering said last mentioned feeding means effective on the ribbon.
28. In a machine of the class described, the combination of recording elements, a ribbon, means for feeding the same during each operation of the machine, and means for feeding the same an additional extent after a certain length of ribbon has been fed past said recording elements.
29. In a machine of the class described, the combination of recording elements, an
' endless ribbon cooperating therewith, means distance in the same diduring each operation operable during each operation ofthe machine for feeding said ribbon, and means under control of said ribbon for preventing cooperation between said elements and certain portions of said ribbon.
30. The combination of recording elements, a ribbon cooperating therewith, means for feeding said ribbon past said elements, and means rendered effective under control of said ribbon for preventing cooperation between said elements and portions of said ribbon passing said elements.
31. The combination of recording elements, a ribbon cooperating therewith, means for feeding said ribbon past said elements, and means for'preventing cooperation between said elements and portions of said ribbon passing said elements.
32. An inking ribbon provided with a seam, and a member positioned with reference to said seam and projecting from one edge of said ribbon.
33. An inking ribbon provided with a seam, and a bar secured to said ribbon in position with reference to said seam.
34. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an inking ribbon, means for feeding said ribbon a certain distance of the machine, special automatic means for feeding said ribbon an additional extent in the same direction, and means for controlling the effectiveness of said special automatic feeding means.
35. The combination of a ribbon, normally operable automatic feeding means therefor, and a second automatic feeding means effective under control of said ribbon for feeding the ribbon in the same direction as the first feeding means.
36. In a machine of the class described, the combination of recording elements, a ribbon, automatic means for feeding the same during each operation of the machine, automatic means for feeding the same an additional extent after a certain length of ribbon has been fed past said recording elements, and means on said ribbon for rendering said last mentioned feeding means effective on the ribbon.
