Abstract

620,846. Typewriters &c. BRUMHILL, C. W. June 13, 1946, No. 17687. [Class 100 (iv)] In a typewriter or like machine, particularly a hectograph machine employing a coated web 10, a feeding or guiding device comprises a hollow roller, the peripheral surface of which comprises a series of circumferentially spaced elements which engage the web tor a portion only of the periphery, the space between the elements affording passage for the coating material detached from the web. As shown, a web 10 fed from a supply spool 13 is guided to a platen 5 over a roller 18 fixed to the main frame and over rollers 19, 20 on the carriage to the front of the carriage where it is guided on its coated surface by the hollow rollers 21 where it travels through a guide to the typing station behind a master sheet. The path of the ribbon and details of the guide are described in Specifications 596,682 and 596,685 respectively. The web 10 is drawn off by a roller 15 and a co-operating spring-pressed roller 16, each of hollow construction comprising, respectively, sleeves 34, 37, flanges 33, 36 and a series of spaced vanes 35, 38 intermeshing with each other. Roller 15 is driven by a pin 53 on a toothed disc 49 in frictional engagement with a toothed disc 47 driven by a spring drum 44 wound by a cord 45 during the reverse traverse of the carriage. During the winding of the drum 44, a pawl mechanism 46, 48 trails over the tooth disc 47 which remains stationary. When a rack release lever or a tabulator key is depressed, a pawl 56 engages and locks the disc 49, and the slipping action of the clutchwasher 50 allows the drum 44 to wind up a cord 45. Another pawl 57 prevents the disc 49 from rotating in the reverse direction. A web-clamp 29 secures the web to the carriage during letter-spacing. The used web, after passing through rollers 15, 16, is removed from roller by a stripper 43 and is prevented from contacting the disc 49 by a guard plate 58.
