Abstract

875,141. Typewriters &c. SMITH & SON (ALACRA) Ltd., W. H. Nov. 20, 1957 [Nov. 22, 1956; June 13, 1957], Nos. 35792/56 and 18664/57. Class 100(4) A web manipulating machine such as a typewriting, tabulating, accounting, adding, calculating, or addressing machine has the feed of the webs of stationery or other material such as magnetic tape stopped in predetermined positions under the control of an endless belt, band, chain or like flexible element rotated in synchronism with the stationery feed. As shown applied to an electric typewriter a plastic band 30 is fed over a pin wheel 25 on a shaft 12 which is an extension of the shaft of the platen 10. The belt 30 has notches 44 in its edge spaced to stop the stationery feed at the desired points when a roller 36 of a micro-switch 35 enters the notch and opens the switch. Various modifications of the band are described and it may be used to control more than one web feeding device at a time by having differently shaped or positioned notches. Two programs may be provided on a single tape. The band and web may be fed by a common pin or sprocket drive. Projections may replace the notches in the band. Line spacing. A solenoid 16 is energized to produce line spacing upon the carriage return and acts through levers 17, 18 to draw a pawl 20 over the next tooth of a wheel 15 so that when the solenoid is released again a spring 21 is allowed to advance the wheel 15 one or more line spaces. In use after one line has been typed line spacing occurs which also advances the band 30 so that the roller 36 is withdrawn from the corresponding notch 44 thus closing the micro-switch 35. Another line can now be typed or, as by depressing a special key, a switch can be closed which will cause continuous line spacing to occur until the next notch 44 opens the micro-switch 35 to stop the feed.
