Abstract
885,687. Typewriters. SMITH & SON (ALACRA) Ltd., W. H. June 11, 1958 [June 13, 1957], No. 18725/57. Class 100(4) In a typewriter or like machine a platen is driven by a constantly rotating electric motor in synchronism with a tape 18 driven by a pin wheel 16 on the platen shaft. Initial manual depression of a key 10 causes line spacing and carriage return while full depression closes a switch 25 in series with a switch 20 and a solenoid 24 which when energized holds the key fully depressed to cause continuous rotation of the platen shaft. At a predetermined position a notch in the tape 18 opens the switch 20 to de-energize the solenoid 24 to stop the platen feed. After one line spacing the switch 20 is again closed and a long feed can again be started by full depression of the key 10. The solenoid may hold the key directly or through a latch while its engagement may be mechanically prevented except when the key is fully depressed in which case the switch 25 may be omitted. In a modification the solenoid or an additional solenoid may be provided to over-rule pressure on the key, thus preventing over-run. The invention may be applied to the typing part of a teleprinter. Specifications 408,125 and 875,141 are referred to.
